The excellent mid/bass unit is the PL18 from the Vifa Premium Line Series. It

system). The bass is precise and very deep; it is a tight and extremely fast
bass, which plays a very transparent midrange too.
The Vifa ring radiator tweeter is without ferro fluid oil and therefore
extreme detailed in the upper octaves; the details of the instrument are amazing
and let you hear the finest detail your SACD's.
The cabinet is made of MDF - 22mm baffle and 19mm sides. The height is
15", the depth is 13,5" and the width is only 8".
The bass reflex port is positioned on the rear side.

Once I put the AVinci IIIs up on the stands, they haven't come down. The IIIs
are so pleasant to listen to I can't bring myself to change them out! On the
Outlaw the Vandersteen IC's metal tweeter was very bright, but on the AVinci's
the Vifa tweeter and your crossovers are magic. Not only do you get more detail
in the upper regions but, remarkably, the highs are smoother, more refined. And
then there is the low end bass. I have about 80 hours on the III's now and the
bass has opened up. I have turned my subwoofer off! Oh, I know I loose a little
from 20 Hz - 40 Hz, but the bass that is there is deep and tight. I often have
to make sure that the subwoofer is actually turned off! And another remarkable
thing, I can play the III's at low volume, even with the Outlaw 1050 receiver,
and still get the detail out of the recording. With most speakers the volume
must be higher for the speakers to come to life, but the AVvinci's just like to
sing, and smooth they are! These are really remarkable speakers!!

As you say, the speakers are an incredible bargain. Over the last 25 years I
have bought pieces of equipment that show what are bad recordings and those that
are good. It can sometimes be a burden on upgrading equipment as it can stop you
from playing certain CD's even tough you like the artist! It's one of the
reasons why cheap all-in-one stereo's are popular, because they make all music
sound the same.
As I have mentioned before, I like Jazz and Classical music. In particular I
love Brazilian jazz, which has lots of percussion, whistles and other subtle
sounds in the background. On Percussion and acoustic instruments the speakers
are very fast, with plenty of 'snap'. It seems that they are happiest when
playing recordings that have not been processed too much. Snare drums and
cymbals have a very realistic sound but pop recordings that have been
manipulated in the studio with 48 tracks sound artificial.
There is more bass than I expected and initially I played them without my
subwoofer. I now have the subwoofer turned down to a crossover point of about 30
Hz., just to supplement the speakers a little bit. The AV3's are also more
efficient than I thought so I do not have to turn my pre-amp up as much as I did
before. I will certainly recommend the AV 3's to my friends.
